Media Outreach Made Easy: An Advocates Guide to Working with the Press
"If we are going to educate the public about domestic violence - encourage them to take action to prevent or reduce this crime, or ask them to support our efforts - we must work with the media."

The National Resource Center on Domestic Violence published this practical guide to introduce domestic violence advocates to basic tenets of media advocacy work. This is one of only a handful of media guides specifically focused on domestic violence issues. The guide breaks down media advocacy into five topic areas: preparing a media list, preparing for interviews, responding to media stories, generating coverage, and placing public service announcements (PSAs). Each section offers tips and strategies in a concise, easy-to-grasp format. The guide also provides practical tips for using talk radio as an outlet for media advocacy. The appendix includes fill-in-the blanks examples of Domestic Violence Awareness Month materials - a media alert, an op-ed piece and a news release - that organizations can adapt and use in their own locally based campaigns. This guidebook can be copied and distributed with appropriate acknowledgement.

Recommended for public health, social service and other community-based organizations that want to incorporate media advocacy into their domestic violence prevention efforts.
