This
special issue of the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) newsletter
summarizes major findings and recommendations of a 1998 symposium
on improving the law enforcement response to crime victims with
disabilities. Symposium participants included researchers, advocates
and public policy experts from disability rights and victim assistance
fields. The newsletter examines the distinct issues and obstacles
people with disabilities face, as well as recommendations for changes
in policies and practices. Brief vignettes of innovative programs
from around the country highlight promising practices now underway
to make law enforcement and domestic violence services more accessible
to people with disabilities. The newsletter features a resource
section of organizations and training materials featured and a list
of symposium participants.
